By Advanced Biz Media | Exclusive Interview: Christian Chramer, CEO of the Norwegian Seafood Council

This small nation in northern Europe isn’t just blessed with natural resources. It’s also a global seafood powerhouse—especially salmon—supplying over 150 countries worldwide.

Behind this international success lies a system built on regulation, discipline, and a masterfully consistent brand story.

At the heart of it is Christian Chramer, a former military officer turned CEO of the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC)—

a man who has elevated “narratives from nature” into one of the most trusted global brands in the food industry.

Christian Chramer served over 13 years in the Norwegian Armed Forces, graduating from both the Armed Forces Command School and War School,

before earning a master’s degree in Management and Organization from UiT – The Arctic University of Norway.

After retiring from military service, he began a new chapter with the Norwegian Seafood Council as

Fisheries Envoy to Southeast Asia—a role in which he frequently traveled across the region,

gaining deep insight into the Thai market, including consumer behavior, culinary culture, and business dynamics.

“We’re in Thailand because we love the people—and the way Thai cuisine has embraced our ingredients.” — Christian Chramer

Following his early career with NSC, Chramer joined the Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise (NHO)—the country’s largest business association.

For seven years, he held several key roles: Regional Director, Communications Director, and later Area Director, overseeing national communications, public relations, and regional operations.

With a rare blend of experience across military, government, corporate communications, and strategic business,

Chramer returned to NSC in 2022 as CEO—fully equipped to lead the brand into its next global chapter.

“Norway is a nation of energy, and a nation of seafood.”

For over 35 years, NSC has built the Norwegian seafood brand around a core narrative: These aren’t just fresh fish—they are traceable, sustainable, and born of nature’s purest waters under some of the world’s strictest regulations.

This same brand story is told across all markets—Europe, the U.S., Brazil, and Thailand creating a message that transcends borders and resists fleeting trends.

“We take pride in transparency, traceability, and strict government regulation.”

Every fish that leaves Norway can be traced from catch to kitchen.

Some companies even employ facial recognition technology to prove the identity of individual fish—from farm to fork.

“There’s so much data out there. What matters is choosing what to communicate—what consumers actually care about—so we don’t overwhelm them.”

In an era of information overload, the brands that communicate selectively and intentionally are the ones that earn lasting trust.

“The big challenge today is whether we’ll have enough food for the world.”

Chramer believes the ocean is the key to long-term global food security—if managed sustainably.

And Norway is doing just that, through quota systems, controlled aquaculture, and regulated wild fisheries.

“Norwegian salmon can be eaten raw, and it’s incredibly popular among younger consumers.”

He notes that the next challenge isn’t about production, but about reaching new consumers

and making seafood a part of everyday life—in restaurants, supermarkets, and even convenience stores.

“Thai people love our salmon, mackerel, king crab, and shellfish. We want to grow together.”

To Chramer, Thailand is a key regional partner—not just a short-term buyer.

NSC is looking for long-term collaboration with Thai businesses who share its values of quality, transparency, and sustainability.

    1. Strong Brands Must Be Verifiable
Modern consumers buy based on confidence, not just marketing.
Show your sources, use QR codes, and implement traceability systems—trust is built with facts.

    2. Tell One Story Everywhere
A consistent brand message breeds long-term credibility.
Don’t change your core story for every market—just adapt the tone, not the truth.

    3. Follow Consumer Trends—Not Just Price Wars
People don’t want the cheapest product. They want one that understands their needs. Use data to guide product development—not gut instinct.

    4. Build Partnerships, Not Just Transactions
If you view your international clients as partners—not just paychecks—you’ll gain more than sales: You’ll gain shared growth and deeper market access.

Norwegian seafood is never just sold as “raw material.” It’s positioned as a product built on data, purity, and trust. If you’re a Thai entrepreneur with global aspirations, this brand philosophy offers powerful lessons:

Trust never goes on sale. And a transparent brand never goes out of style.
